Halloween: Orígenes, Tradiciones y Celebraciones

Halloween: Origins, Traditions, and Celebrations

One of my favorite holidays, Halloween. It has its roots in Samhain, the merging of pagan and Christian traditions transformed Samhain into Halloween, creating the modern holiday full of costumes and candy.

                         Samhain: The Threshold Between Worlds

On the night of Samhain, the veil between worlds grows thin, allowing the spirits of our ancestors to walk among us. Celebrated from October 31st to November 1st, this ancient Celtic festival marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. On this magical night, bonfires burned, lighting the way for wandering spirits returning home.

The traditions of Samhain are steeped in mystery. Carved pumpkins, precursors to modern Jack-o'-lanterns, were used to guide lost spirits. In this context, the connection to the afterlife becomes palpable, and shadows seem to come alive.

People performed rituals to communicate with their deceased loved ones, seeking advice and guidance. Clothing and costumes, then, were not just adornments, but a way to protect oneself from the dark energies that roamed in the darkness.

Today, Halloween is celebrated as a fun holiday, with children dressed up and going around asking for candy to the tune of "trick or treat." This custom has its roots where the poor went door to door asking for food in exchange for prayers.
